“I take my faith in human goodness,” the man would say. “We will overcome this mountain. We will make it to the valley.” Manjhi was confident about this, and he had every right to be. With his back against the wall, he devised a plan that would forever change India's history - demolishing an entire mountain just so that people could pass through his village on foot for two days without encountering any physical obstacles along the way. Director Ketan Mehta was captivated by the story of Manjhi, a man who single-handedly created a 360-foot wide, 22-foot deep and 600-foot long passage through the mountains of India - all that to reach the nearest hospital 40 kilometers away. Manjhi would later become known as “Mountain Man” or "Mountain Mover" in Indian folklore. The obstacle seemed insurmountable at first glance. No human could demolish such a complex mountain range by himself, but Manjhi, armed with nothing but strength and determination, defied all odds and carved out an entirely new path. The mountains that existed before no longer stood after his efforts were complete. The entire process would take nineteen years and countless hours of labor.The film features the story of 75-year-old Aditya Kumar Manjhi, a farmer from Bihar who started working on the project in 1985 at his wife's insistence. He single-handedly demolished 25,000 tonnes of rock and soil to make way for a highway through the Biligirirangan Hills. Manjhi, once called "Mountain Man" by the media and "India's Martin Luther King" by his followers, was honored at International Mountain Day 2014 as an IUCN nominated UNESCO Heritage Hero. Ironically, Manjhi was initially ridiculed by the people of his village. While many thought he was insane, Manjhi never wavered in his efforts to make a pathway for his people. Despite early failures and rejections from officials, Manjhi persevered until the end. As a reward for his dedication and hard work, the Government of India granted Manjhi with a plot of land on the other side of Mount Gahlaur which he owns till date. In 2007, Manjhi received a Lohia Award from the then President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam for his efforts. In April 2011, Manjhi was selected as one of 12 finalists for the ‘Prosperity from the Roots’ award presented by The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. In 2013, Manjhi was honored with a Padma Shri by the Government of India, four years after being nominated for the honourable title. Unfortunately, due to poor health and old age, Manjhi couldn't receive it in person until 2014 - two years after being awarded the prestigious title. cfa1e77820
